Importance of Learning German According to CEFR Standards

The mandatory requirement of German proficiency (for both studies and jobs) is basically intended to help you settle there easily and quickly. If you are able to communicate you can make good friends and associates; your social circle widens; and you can have a comfortable life in Germany. The significance of acquiring proficiency in German is much more, if you are a student and the medium of instruction is German. Because of this reason, German Authorities have made it mandatory that you possess sufficient German skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) for travelling to Germany (1).

Let’s explain what is expected in more detail. The Common European Framework (CEFR) for Language Learning, developed by the European Council have set the standards for international German courses. It distinguishes six levels of language competence from A1 (beginner level) to C2 (advanced level). For each level there are corresponding exams.

CEFR divides learners into three broad proficiency levels: Beginner A-Level, Intermediate B-Level, and Advanced C-Level. Each proficiency level is further divided into two sub-levels: Beginner A1- and A2-levels, Intermediate B1- and B2-levels, and Advanced C1- and C2-levels. For each level and sublevel, there are four areas of proficiency mastery: reading, listening, speaking and writing (2).
